On September 22, American Banker ranked Sharon Haward-Laird, Head, North American Treasury & Payment Solutions, number 13 on their list of the 25 Most Powerful Women to Watch. The annual list spotlights women to "keep an eye on" in the banking and financial services industry. American Banker's rankings are a who's who of individuals that perform exceptionally but also inspire others in our industry and the communities we serve.
"We are so proud that Sharon has been recognized on this list among such notable trailblazing women in banking," said Dave Casper, U.S. Chief Executive Officer and Group Head, North American Commercial Banking. "Sharon consistently delivers strong leadership with her teams and has shifted the culture within her group to ensure the end-to-end client experience is simple, seamless and intuitive. She sets the bar as a top performer in our industry."
Treasury & Payment Solutions (TPS) has experienced great success under Sharon's leadership. Her work across the business has driven extensive growth while maintaining strong return on equity among her peers at the bank. Building on their strong momentum from the past several years, Sharon and her team continue to accomplish much transformational work this year, including:
- Launching the Online Banking for Business mobile app with innovative biometric authentication for commercial banking clients, allowing them to use their eyes, face, voice or fingerprint to securely access their accounts and approve payments online and on the go
- Rolling out the Online Banking for Business Help Centre, an online self-help hub featuring bite-sized, step-by-step instructions and how-to videos, empowering customers to solve their problems and complete tasks quickly without needing to call the bank's customer service teams
- Helping to transform the client payments experience with the launch of an award-winning BMO Payment Hub, integrating channels and back-end systems and enabling faster payments, like Zelle in the U.S and FX wires and BMO Global Pay in Canada.
Outside of BMO, Sharon plays a dynamic role in the payment industry, including sitting on the Senior Member Advisory Council for Payments Canada, acting as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of Interac Corp., one of Canada's leading payments brands, and as a member of the board of Moneris Corporation, one of North America's largest payment processors.
Sharon's work does not stop at her line of business. As a proud BMO Mental Health Champion, she speaks passionately and candidly about her family's journey, ensuring mental health is seen as an essential component of overall employee health and encouraging others to seek help and provide support.
"Using my voice to drive inclusivity and openness is one of my greatest accomplishments and I believe it has a lasting impact," said Sharon. "We can all benefit from an environment where we feel we can bring our full selves to work and I think my team is an example of how doing so leads to success."
