This week, my management team had the opportunity to give an audience of analysts and investors an in-depth view of the disciplined, strategic approach we’ve taken to building our North American Commercial Banking business, along with some of our plans for the future. I’d like to share some of those thoughts with you, our clients and prospective clients.
We discussed the strength of our position, including the fact that we’re:
- The seventh-largest commercial bank in North America
- Number two in Canada
- The number one commercial bank in Wisconsin
- Number two in Chicago
All of this is because we have a strong franchise built on deep sector expertise, a strong local presence across North America and a broad suite of solutions. All delivered by the smartest bankers in the business. Everything we do is built around the needs of our clients. Through all the ups and downs of the business cycle, we’ve learned that if you support a client during tough times, you’ve earned a client for life.
Consistency Amid Change
Looking ahead, we are in an enviable position to continue building on our strong foundation. With a strong capital base, a team of experienced and thoughtful bankers, and a consistent approach to providing the solutions and guidance our clients demand, we will continue to strengthen our position in core markets, selectively enter new markets and continue to grow our specialty businesses.
Our last investor day was just shy of two years ago. Plenty has changed since then, including the fact that our world has been dealing with the significant impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic for the last six months. But our North American Commercial Banking business has been a constant. The same management team that was in place then is still in place, executing on the same strategy and same priorities we laid out two years ago.
While change is inevitable, our ability to navigate shifting conditions with consistency in our focus, leadership and execution is what allows us to partner—and grow—with great clients.
