Marian K. Schneider
President of Verified Voting

As a lawyer and litigator, Marian has championed voting rights and worked to improve the voting experience for all Pennsylvania voters. Immediately before becoming President of Verified Voting, Marian served as Special Advisor to Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf on Election Policy. Previously, Governor Wolf appointed her as the Deputy Secretary for Elections and Administration in the Pennsylvania Department of State where she served from February 2015 until May 2017.
Marian’s signature accomplishment while at the Department was the launch of Pennsylvania’s online voter registration application that has been widely embraced by the Pennsylvania electorate.Marian introduced numerous reforms during her tenure all with the goal of making voting more available and easier for Pennsylvanians. Marian advocated for Pennsylvania’s membership in the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) and served as the inaugural PA member of ERIC’s Board of Directors. Marian also served as the Pennsylvania state election official on the EAC’s Standards Board and on the Pennsylvania Advisory Committee on Voting Technology to the Joint State Government Commission of the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
Since 2006, Marian has focused on the intersection of civil rights and election law. Formerly, she was a Senior Attorney with Advancement Project’s Voter Protection program and was trial counsel in Applewhite v. Commonwealth, successfully challenging Pennsylvania’s restrictive photo ID law on behalf of voters as an unconstitutional infringement on the fundamental right to vote. She represented the plaintiffs in the successful case under § 2 of the Voting Rights Act against Chester County to remedy the 6-8 hour waiting times endured by African-American voters in the 2008 presidential election.
Marian authored the chapter “Election Security: Increasing Election Integrity by Improving Cybersecurity” in The Future of Election Administration, Brown, Mitchell, Hale, Kathleen, King, Bridgett A., editors, Palgrave MacMillan, 2020. Marian is a frequent speaker on election security and election administration issues and is quoted in the press - most notably by Politico, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Salon, Wired, GovTech and NPR.
