In the latest episode of Journeys to Growing the Good on Markets Plus, host Issam Majeed sits down with Dr. Kevin Spencer, Co-Founder and CEO of Ring Rescue, and Randy Williamson, Ring Rescue board member and business leader, to discuss how a common yet overlooked medical problem became the foundation for a growing healthcare technology company. Together, they share lessons on innovation, entrepreneurship, leadership, the butterfly effect in marketing, and the power of identifying opportunities hiding in plain sight.

Finding Opportunity in an Everyday Problem

Many successful businesses begin by solving a challenge that others have accepted as unavoidable. For Ring Rescue, that challenge was ring entrapment.

As an emergency physician, Dr. Spencer saw firsthand how rings can become stuck due to swelling, injury, or other medical conditions. Some cases are straightforward; others can escalate into finger emergencies. Although the problem is more common than many realize, healthcare providers lacked the specialized tools needed to manage it effectively, especially when modern ring materials exceeded the capabilities of outdated equipment. Clinicians therefore often improvised with non-medical tools borrowed from maintenance departments, resulting in procedures that could be time-consuming, risky, stressful for patients, and inconsistent with modern standards for medical equipment.

What began as an engineering project evolved into a company focused on modernizing how this problem is managed. In 2018, Spencer joined co-founders Patrick Hennessey and Brad MacKeil to refine the concept and launch Ring Rescue. Rather than focus on a single product, the team set out to create a complete system designed to remove rings intact when feasible and safely cut them when necessary. Ring Rescue has since grown in pursuit of its goal of establishing a global standard of care for a common medical problem that has long been hiding in plain sight.

Turning Innovation into a Scalable Business

For Williamson, who has spent decades advising and investing in growing companies, the appeal of Ring Rescue was not only the product itself but also the people behind it.

He emphasized that successful businesses are built on more than great ideas. While innovation is essential, scaling a company requires the right team, governance, strategy, and execution. As he noted during the conversation, great ideas may spark opportunity, but building a sustainable business requires many different skills working together toward a common goal.

Williamson credits the Ring Rescue founders for recognizing the value of board leadership early in the company's journey. By surrounding themselves with experienced advisors and industry leaders, they gained access to guidance that helped shape critical business decisions, from commercialization strategies to market expansion plans.

That commitment to learning and continuous improvement remains a defining characteristic of the company today.

The Real-World Impact of Better Healthcare Solutions

While Ring Rescue's growth story offers valuable lessons for entrepreneurs, Spencer remains focused on the impact the technology can have on patients and healthcare providers.

One example involved an 11-year-old girl in Georgia whose ring remained stuck and became progressively tighter despite removal attempts at two hospitals. After nearly six hours of unsuccessful attempts and growing concern that surgery might be required, a Chatham County EMS supervisor used Ring Rescue’s Dolphin Ring Cutter to safely remove the ring in about ten minutes. The patient avoided surgery and was able to return home without permanent injury.

For Spencer, examples like these reinforce the importance of innovation in healthcare. Equipping frontline professionals with the right tools can improve patient outcomes, reduce delays in care, and help healthcare systems operate more effectively.

The company's solutions are now used at more than 2,200 healthcare sites across Canada and the United States, including major health systems and leading hospitals. Ring Rescue has also been adopted across every emergency department in Nova Scotia, helping to standardize care for patients experiencing ring entrapment.

Building Awareness Through Creativity and Credibility

The conversation also explored how innovative companies can raise awareness in increasingly competitive markets.

Ring Rescue gained national exposure through an appearance on Dragons' Den, where the founders struck a deal with entrepreneurs Michele Romanow and Robert Herjavec. Spencer shared behind-the-scenes stories from the experience, including last-minute challenges that tested the team's ability to adapt under pressure.

More recently, Ring Rescue's technology appeared on HBO's medical drama The Pitt, a series widely recognized for its commitment to medical realism. The feature broadened awareness of the technology among both the public and healthcare professionals while reinforcing the company's credibility within the emergency medicine community.

Williamson noted that modern companies must think creatively about how they educate customers and communicate value. In today's environment, sustained growth requires a combination of product innovation, marketing, education, and ongoing engagement with end users.

Growing the Good Through Innovation

Looking ahead, Spencer and Williamson remain focused on expanding Ring Rescue's reach while continuing to improve healthcare outcomes.

Their vision extends beyond business success. Both leaders emphasized the importance of mentorship, community impact, and helping others tackle meaningful problems. Whether improving outcomes for patients, equipping healthcare providers, or supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs, they aim to create lasting value that extends well beyond financial performance.

Ultimately, Ring Rescue's story serves as a reminder that some of the most significant opportunities can emerge from problems that many people overlook. By combining innovation, expertise, and a commitment to solving real-world challenges, the company is helping transform an everyday healthcare issue into a better experience for patients and providers alike.
